I'm not a big fan of cake. I don't hate cake, but I don't get super excited about it either. I'm generally just ambivalent about cake. Don't get me wrong - if the choice is between cake or no dessert, I'm eating the cake. But if the choice is between cake or any kind of pie, ice cream, bread pudding, custard, something chocolate, a fruit dish or a dish of just about anything that is labeled as a dessert, the cake is getting chosen last. Wife and I seriously discussed having something other than cake at our wedding (though we ended up deciding that we should stick with tradition). I've never really understood why people have birthday cake. Couldn't something better be chosen? The best idea I can come up with is that people don't want to risk putting fire on a dessert that they actually care about, so they use cake for birthdays.
If you look at the recent blog posts, you see pictures of Elizabeth's birthday cake. Let me assure you, that the chocolate cake with chocolate and peanut butter frosting that Wife baked does not fall into the category of mediocre cake that I discussed above. The cake that Wife made was a really, really exceptional cake. Of course, all of Wife's cakes are, as are her pies, cookies and homemade ice creams. Elizabeth's cake looks great, but a lot of good looking cakes taste terrible. Cake has the ability fool hungry eaters, because they can be made to look appealing, but then when a bite is taken, the eater realizes that it's just boring cake. Elizabeth's cake looks great, but tastes infinitely better than it looks.
Anyway, I just wanted to write a blog post to tell you how incredible Elizabeth's cake was. I feel badly for our readers that have never had one of Wife's cakes. Her cakes will change your entire perception about the food category that is cake. You may wish to beg and plead to get her to bake you one.
