Chuck Smith Died

On October 3rd, at about 3:00 in the morning, Chuck Smith died after battling cancer for the past two years. I realize that this is a huge detour from the typical shrine of pictures that this blog has become, but the passing of Pastor Chuck requires at least a few words.  Chuck Smith, the long-time pastor of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa in Southern California, sparked the Calvary Chapel movement which now comprises some 1,600 churches around the world.  Though the worldwide Calvary Chapel movement is huge, particularly in the Western United States, Pastor Chuck's influence spreads much, much deeper than Calvary Chapels.  His acceptance and outreach to hippies in the 1960s and 70s defined the "Jesus Movement" and transformed the worship style of churches around the world.  What I appreciate most about his ministry is his steadfast commitment to expository teaching and preaching.  He simply taught the Bible simply.  When history evaluates the men and women who had the greatest impact on American Christianity in the twentieth century, I fully expect that there will be few, if any, who are listed above Pastor Chuck.
